Mauritius is different from one coast to the next

On Île aux Cerfs, the round begins with a boat trip. Even the journey to the course shows that golf can be more than just teeing off against a beautiful backdrop. In Mauritius, not only does the view change with every stretch of coastline, but so does the character of the game. From wind-swept lagoon holes to park-like fairways in tea plantations, right through to an open links-style experience. It is precisely this diversity that makes the island so appealing to golfers.

EAST COAST: WITH A VIEW OF THE LAGOON AND THE WIND IN YOUR HAIR

On the east coast, there is a particularly wide choice of golf courses. The Île aux Cerfs Golf Club is situated on an offshore island, and even the boat transfer is part of the experience. At the Anahita Golf Club, sweeping fairways run alongside the lagoon, and the wind often becomes a factor in your game. Around Belle Mare, two very different playing experiences alternate: The Legend winds its way through a sheltered, wooded landscape, whilst The Links is more open and offers a unique backdrop with volcanic rock formations.

The choice of hotel also suits your preferred golfing pace. Both the Constance Belle Mare Plage and the Constance Price Maurice are situated right on the beach and offer two courses – The Legend and The Links – in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita and The Bay Club at Anahita combine an exclusive and relaxed atmosphere with golf and relaxation all in one place. The Shangri-La Le Touessrok is situated on a beautiful, turquoise lagoon with views of Île aux Cerfs. A particular highlight is the private island ‘Ilot Mangénie’, complete with daybeds, a bar and a restaurant, which can be reached by boat in just a few minutes.

THE SOUTH-WEST: MORE THAN JUST A BEAUTIFUL SETTING

In the south-west, Le Morne mountain adds a distinctive touch to the landscape. Further south, in Bel Ombre, lie two courses – Le Château and La Réserve Golf Links – which differ markedly from one another. Le Château blends into the landscaped gardens of a historic château. Lakes, streams and ancient trees line the course, whilst gentle hills and spacious fairways lend it a park-like character. La Réserve Golf Links has a more open and unspoilt feel. The grassy landscape and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean define its links-style character.

The resorts also reflect the region’s atmosphere. The Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort combines the style of a historic plantation house with its own golf course. At the foot of Le Morne lie the Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa and the Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa, which are ideal destinations for guests who wish to combine a round of golf on the Paradis Golf Course with walks on the beach and relaxing hours by the sea.

A special way to round off the day awaits at the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve: a guided sunset safari takes you to the Mirador in a 4x4, buggy or quad bike. There, in the last light of the evening, the landscape reveals yet another side of itself.

THE NORTH: PLAY GOLF AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ISLAND LIFE

In the north, Mont Choisy Le Golf combines a sporting challenge with the landscape of a former sugar cane plantation. Water hazards and volcanic rock formations characterise the course. It calls for a strategic game, where good course management counts for more than sheer distance. After the round, Grand Baie, with its restaurants, boutiques and lively atmosphere, offers a striking contrast to the tranquil greens of the course you have just played. Cap Malheureux is well worth a visit on a trip along the coast. The red-roofed Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice church stands right by the turquoise lagoon and is one of the most famous sights in the north. The Trou Aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is the ideal choice of hotel for golf breaks in Mont Choisy. The Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury is also a highly recommended option for guests wishing to combine a luxurious beach holiday with golf and fine dining.

Which coast is right for your holiday?

If you want as many courses as possible to choose from, the east coast is the ideal base. The south-west appeals to golfers who appreciate a variety of course styles and stunning scenery. In the north, a round of golf can be combined particularly well with restaurants, boutiques and day trips. The key is to ensure that the hotel’s location, the number of rounds you wish to play and the days you have available for your holiday all fit together.Alpha Golftours has been organising bespoke golf holidays for over 35 years. The team knows many resorts first-hand and has played or visited numerous courses around the globe. Visit Alpha Golftours at the golf fair.
