Biosphere Reserve

The attachment the inhabitants of the island have towards Menorca is more than simply where they were born. It is a bond, instinctively protective, which has proved beneficial over the last few decades: in the face of widespread urban development elsewhere, the prevailing feeling here is of peace and tranquillity.
UNESCO declared the island a biosphere reserve in 1993, in recognition of the balance achieved between economic development, and conservation of the environment and of local traditions. Sustainability is the word of the moment, but it has long been significant in Menorca.
