These 8 Christmas markets are worth a visit

During Advent, large Christmas markets with their festive atmosphere attract visitors in many places. But there are also charming alternatives to discover away from the hustle and bustle. Our media partner, Travel Magazine, presents eight small, lesser-known Christmas markets in Switzerland that delight with their special ambiance and regional handicrafts.

Vevey Riviera Noël (VD) November 20 to December 24, 2025

Around 20 exhibitors with authentic handicraft products: At the Vevey Riviera Noël, a magical and festive atmosphere on the Place du Marché offers a wealth of unique gift options. A cozy atmosphere also prevails in the "Astra Dôme" opposite the Astra Hotel Vevey. The location is ideal for an end-of-year aperitif. And ice skating pros and beginners alike will also get their money's worth during the Christmas season thanks to the ice rink in the neighboring Vevey Noël Christmas Village. The village on Place Scanavin is an additional offering alongside the Christmas market and can be visited from November 22nd to December 31st.

Lugano Christmas Market (TI) November 27, 2025, to January 6, 2026

Around the market stalls of the Lugano Christmas market, visitors are immersed in a world of masterful handicrafts, stylish decorations, and regional specialties. The chalets with their culinary offerings transform into open-air living rooms with typical dishes, live music, and evening DJ sets. Meanwhile, in the magical Parco Ciani, an ice rink surrounded by nature awaits young and old.

Gommer Advent Market, Fiesch (VS) November 21st to 23rd, 2025

At the foot of the majestic Great Aletsch Glacier, the Christmas season begins even before the first Advent. This is thanks to the traditional Gommer Advent Market in Fiesch. Over 70 stalls offer handicrafts and regional delicacies, such as Valais mulled wine from local producers and traditional dishes like cholera. The Gommer Advent Market is accompanied by a musical and cultural program.

Gruyères Christmas Market (FR) November 28 to December 21, 2025

For over ten years, the medieval town of Gruyères has transformed into an atmospheric Christmas village during Advent. More than 40 artisans present their creations, accompanied by festive music and elaborately decorated alleyways. After work or on the weekend, a warming glass of mulled wine beckons. In addition to the craft stalls, various activities provide entertainment over the three weekends. These include Family Day and a visit from Saint Nicholas, performances, concerts, and workshops for children.

Brunnen (SZ) Christmas Market November 28–30, 2025

The Christmas market in Brunnen stretches from the lakeside promenade to the village center. Thanks to Lake Lucerne and the lights reflecting in the water, the Christmas market exudes a special atmosphere. There's also a family-friendly program with candle-making, gingerbread decorating, Christmas stories, and a visit from Santa Claus. And, of course, there are also market stalls with all sorts of offerings.

Brienz Christmas Market (BE) November 29-30, 2025

The Christmas market in Brienz is fortunate: It is idyllically situated between the historic village and the lake promenade. Lovingly decorated cottages filled with handmade items and delicacies line the market. Children ride for free on the historic horse-drawn carriage ride. Santa Claus also makes an appearance in Brienz and visits the market grounds. And: The woodcarving school and the violin-making school open their doors to everyone on the Christmas market weekend.

Schwellbrunn Christmas Market (AR) November 29, 2025

In the car-free village center of Schwellbrunn, around 40 exhibitors await visitors with a selection of Christmas arrangements, angels, jewelry, crafts, books, calendars, and candles. You definitely won't go hungry in Schwellbrunn either: various stalls, restaurants, and the "Kafistobe" (cafeteria) in the parish hall will cater for your culinary needs. At 5:15 p.m., the children's lantern procession with a final song will take place in front of the church. Santa Claus and the "Schmutli" (scraper) will also be there, distributing gifts to the children. The day concludes with a concert in the church at 8 p.m.

Fairytale Town of Stein am Rhein (SH) December 3, 2025, to January 1, 2026

The Fairy Tale Town in Stein am Rhein transforms the old town and St. Georgen Monastery into a sea of lights with cozy illuminated houses. Activities include free carousel rides, music, mulled wine or cider in a fairy tale cup, numerous culinary stalls, and free fairy tale tours through the town. In addition to the market experience, a visit to the concurrent Medieval Market and the Country & Western Days is also worthwhile.
