11 city trips in autumn

Autumn bathes the world in new colors, and the mood becomes more tranquil. It's the perfect season to visit Europe's most beautiful cities before winter sets in. Our media partner, Travel Magazine, has compiled 11 very different city tips.

Lisbon, Portugal

Autumn brings tranquility to the streets of Lisbon. The historic Alfama district invites you to wander through narrow alleys and let yourself drift among the houses, courtyards, and bars. Standing on the walls of the Castelo de São Jorge castle affords magnificent panoramic views. The historic atmosphere is not only lingering on the city walls, but also permeates the air when the traditional fado music plays in the evenings. Another plus: the beaches outside the city gates are emptier than in summer.

Bordeaux, France

Autumn is the ideal time of year to explore the city on the Garonne River in southwest France. The old town, with its squares, markets, and historic facades, is particularly atmospheric. Those leaving the city will find the wine-growing region of Saint-Émilion or head to the seaside dunes of Arcachon. Culinary arts and architecture go hand in hand in the city. Visitors to Bordeaux immerse themselves in the region's history and gastronomy.

Bilbao, Spain

Bilbao is much more than the Guggenheim Museum, which attracts and inspires art lovers from all over Europe. In autumn, vibrant colors permeate the surrounding vineyards, giving the city a completely different look. The old town is home to numerous bars serving the famous pintxos – small, imaginatively topped slices of bread from the Basque Country – and there's time to experience Bilbao's transformation from an industrial city to a modern hub with a stroll along the river.

Florence, Italy

Florence is one of the most romantic destinations in Europe. In the golden light of autumn, the city showcases its magnificent Renaissance architecture at its finest. The city boasts cultural highlights such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, and Michelangelo's David. In the lively markets, vendors offer fresh specialties, leather goods, and fabrics. Strolling between ancient walls and modern galleries, you'll experience both history and Italian joie de vivre.

Tiflis, Georgien

Gdansk, Poland

This port city on the Baltic Sea once belonged to Prussia and had many German-speaking residents. Large parts of the city were destroyed in World War II. Fortunately, the city center, especially the old town district, has been largely reconstructed. Strolling along the Long Market today reveals a vibrant port city, where cafés, amber shops, and the sea are all present. The connection to the Baltic Sea is palpable everywhere. Fresh breezes and the changing light over the brick houses characterize the landscape.

Bratislava, Slovakia

How about a trip to a city that's not a tourist classic but still captivates? Slovakia's capital, Bratislava (in German: Pressburg), lies on the Danube and borders both Austria and Hungary. The Old Town beckons with its 18th-century historic charm, hip cafés, and restaurants. The surrounding vineyards invite you to hike and cycle in the Little Carpathians.

Brussels, Belgium

Historic, modern, and the art of living: Brussels presents itself in a variety of ways. The Grote Markt, with its town hall, is not only the vibrant heart of the city but also visually stunning, for example, at night when everything is illuminated. Museums and galleries house fascinating art treasures. Baroque facades, the sweet scent of waffles, stylish boutiques, and quaint pubs characterize the streetscape. The charm of the trendy neighborhoods, combined with international influences, makes Brussels a city of contrasts.

Mali Losinj, Croatia

The island of Lošinj is a paradise for those seeking relaxation and animal lovers. Surrounded by the clear waters of the Adriatic and fragrant pine forests, the natural harbor of Mali Lošinj invites you to stroll and spend relaxing holidays. As a climatic health resort, the town boasts a Mediterranean climate. A highlight are boat trips off the west coast to see the dolphins – a unique experience, topped off with freshly caught fish and Croatian wine in a picturesque tavern.

Constance, Lake Constance

Constance combines the old town, water, and panoramic views in an exciting way. Lake Constance is omnipresent, and boats and seagulls dominate the scene. The historic old town boasts winding streets and imposing buildings, while beach promenades and lakeside cafés invite you to relax. Themed tours provide interesting insights into the city's eventful history. Those who enjoy being active can hop on a bike and explore the green surroundings or enjoy a boat trip to neighboring countries.

Budapest, Hungary

The name of Hungary's capital comes from the fact that the two former cities of Buda and Pest, located on opposite banks of the Danube, were merged. Magnificent cathedrals, impressive palaces, and the striking parliament building characterize the cityscape and serve as a reminder of the nation's rich history. Those looking for a spot of shopping will find a lively shopping street on the famous Váci Street in the heart of Pest. From there, many of the city's attractions are easily accessible.
