Caroline Malone: You've been toying with the idea of taking up golf for a while, but what do you actually need to get started? One of the most important things to start with is the right equipment and, of course, a golf school with good lessons. The choice in golf stores is huge. When buying golf clubs, many beginners make the first mistake. If you choose a set of clubs that doesn't suit your ability or physique, you risk failure. It's important to have the right equipment, and customized golf clubs often cost no more - they just need to be ordered correctly! Don't worry, we'll help you make the right choice. Read on for a complete guide for beginner golfers.
7 valuable tips
1. Find the right golf club Golf clubs are not “one size fits all”! A set that works for your friend may not necessarily be suitable for you. Make an appointment with a PGA professional or club fitter who can advise you. As with buying a car, it's important to take a test drive! So test the golf clubs before you buy them to form your own opinion.
2. don't buy the whole setIf you are just starting out, you don't need a whole set of rackets. Buy half a set, which is designed for beginners. It's easier on your budget and not as expensive as a full set. As you get better and develop your technique, you can expand your half set or swap it for a full set.
3. choose a shorter driverYour driver is the main club you will use at the start of each hole. It has the biggest head and can hit the ball the furthest. It is also the longest club in your set. Therefore, you should try to find the shortest driver you can get. If you buy a longer driver, it will be harder to control and you won't get optimal results.
4. buy the putterThe putter is the club you use when you are already on the green and want to get the ball into the hole. It has a flat face that makes it easier for you to hit the ball straight. As you can imagine, you will be using your putter a lot, so you should make sure you find the right one for you. Your purchase decision will depend on your height and the length of your arms, so test the putter in the golf store. If you can't keep it parallel to the ground when you hit the ball, it's not the right one for you.You should also consider the loft of the putter. If the putter has the right loft, the ball will bounce less and have a higher chance of getting into the hole.
5. irons vs. hybrid clubsA beginner's golf set with 3-, 4- and 5-irons is not a good idea. These irons have too little loft to help a beginner with their swing technique. It makes sense to replace these irons with hybrid clubs. Hybrid clubs are a mixture of wood and iron clubs. You get the best of both worlds, without the weaknesses that each world brings with it. Hybrid rackets have the shape of wooden rackets and the length of iron rackets. This makes them easier for a beginner to control and they are more forgiving if you don't hit the ball perfectly.
6. choosing the right wedgeChoosing the right wedge depends on the course you are playing on. If the green is elevated, you need a wedge with a lot of loft to prevent the ball from bouncing around. If the course has a lot of bunkers with soft sand, your sand wedge should be rather wide and have more bounce.
7. ask your golf friends for helpIf you are still unsure about choosing the right clubs, ask your experienced friends for help. Ask them if you can try out their set so that you can get a better feel for what you should look out for. Ask them to go with you to the golf store or sports store. They can help you find exactly what you need.
